An easy approach to understand tech specs
LTE Physical (PHY) layer characteristics
What is a LTE physical (PHY) layer ?
The Physical layer is the first and lowest layer of computing operating system. This is often termed as the LTE PHY layer. Fundamental operation of this layer is to support hardware implementation of LTE standard. This layer only handles bit streams and the logical nature of packets are irrelevant. In LTE the bits are stored into symbols and slots and transmitted through frames over the RF link.
What characteristics of LTE Physical layer differentiate it from other wireless technologies ?
Physical layer Data Rates - Best data rates among all wireless standards - peak rates,100 Mbps DL and 50 Mbps UL.
LTE Bandwidth - The bandwidth is flexible and scalable in between 1.4 MHz to 20 MHz.
Robust frame structure support through Physical layer - LTE has support for two frame structures. Each frame structure has unique features to support large data capacity.
Access modes LTE Physical Layer - Supports FDD and TDD.
Frequency Domain Equalization - Support of division based equalization support. Its an easy way to achieve equalization in frequency domain.
Cyclic Prefix - Two sizes of CP supported, Long CP and Short CP. Based on the surroundings of the system the CP can be adjusted to achieve better delay spread.
Different technology for DL and UL - Multiple carrier scheme for Downlink using OFDMA whereas only single carrier is supported on UL using SC-FDMA.
Multiple Antenna diversity techniques - AMC and MIMO.
